Simone Biles to make Tokyo 2020 Olympics return in balance beam final

Simone Biles will return to action at the Tokyo Olympics in Tuesday's balance beam final.

The gymnastics legend had pulled out of her last two events in the Japanese capital in order to protect her mental health.

But USA Gymnastics confirmed on Twitter Biles would compete in the balance beam event.

They posted: "We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow - Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!"

Biles, 24, has been flooded with messages of support and praised for her openness and honesty regarding her mental health after pulling out of the team final and the individual all-around event.

She tweeted last week: "The outpouring love & support I’ve received has made me realize I’m more than my accomplishments and gymnastics which I never truly believed before."

Biles had previously asserted: "There is more to life than just gymnastics."

Among those to offer support was swimming legend Michael Phelps, who won an incredible 23 Olympic gold medals in the pool.

“It’s so important, especially to teach kids at a young age to take control of their physical and mental health," he said. "We’re human beings. Nobody is perfect."

Golf star Rory McIlroy added: "I live in the United States and anything that came on the TV about the Olympics, it was Simone Biles.

"You've got 300 whatever million [people in the USA], so the weight on her shoulders in massive.

"Just as I thought Naomi Osaka was right to do what she did at the French Open and take that time off and get herself in the right place, I one hundred per cent agree with what Simone is doing as well.

"I mean you have to put yourself in the best position physically and mentally to be at your best and if you don't feel like you're at that or you're in that position, then you're going to have to make those decisions.

"I'm certainly very impressed with, especially those two women, to do what they did and put themselves first."
