Simona Halep stuns Serena Williams to win Wimbledon 2019 title

Simona Halep stunned Serena Williams to win the Wimbledon women's title.

The Romanian won 6-2 6-2 in less than an hour on Centre Court.

Halep went in as a clear underdog but was on top form from the start, winning the first four games.

Williams looked tense as she chased a record-equalling 24th grand slam singles title but even when she began unleashing her power hitting, Halep had the answers as she closed out the first set.

The American, cheered on by compatriot the Duchess of Sussex, appeared to steady herself at the start of the second, but dropped serve in the fifth game when she overcooked a backhand down the line.

Halep consolidated her break to move within just two games of victory and a second grand slam following her win at the French Open last year.

Williams saved a break point as she desperately tried to stay in the match, but the Romanian made no mistake at the second time of asking to secure a double-break before comfortably holding to secure a famous win.

"It was the best match I have ever played," says Simona Halep.

"I had nerves. My stomach wasn't well before."

"She played out of her mind," says Williams. "I was like a deer in headlights."

BBC commentator John McEnroe said: "It's amazing how well she's moving and how cleanly she's been hitting the ball throughout the match.

"This really is a dream come true. Unbelievable."

Four-time Grand Slam winner Kim Clijsters added: "I was very happy for her to win in Paris - her first Grand Slam after so many years of trying - and she deserves this win. She was the best player from the start of the final to the finish."

BBC Radio 5 Live commentator Annabel Croft added: "I feel very sad for Serena Williams as well. Every time she gets so close to Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam championships, it seems to get further away."
