Simona Halep stakes claim for Wimbledon title after blowing away Victoria Azarenka in third round

Simona Halep staked her claim for the Wimbledon ladies' singles title after crushing Victoria Azarenka on Centre Court.

In the battle of the former world number ones, Halep needed just an hour and six minutes to sweep aside the sorry Belarusian.

The 27-year-old clinched a 6-3, 6-1 defeat to advance to the fourth round where she will face the winner of Cori Gauff and Polona Hercog's match.

Having come through her second round match against Ajla Tomljanovic with one of the most dominant performances of the championship, Azarenka looked certain to provide stiff opposition.

And so it proved as she broke Halep early on, taking a 3-1 lead in the opening set.

Back came the seventh seed, winning five straight games to seal the first set and Azarenka soon imploded in the second, winning just one more game as Halep surged on to secure victory.

With defending champion Angelique Kerber already out, there was another shock early on Friday when 14th seed Caroline Wozniacki feel in straight sets to China's Shuai Zhang.

But the third seeded Karolina Pliskova managed to battle past Su-Wei Hsieh 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 on No. 1 Court to set up an all-Czech tie with Karolina Muchova.
