Simon Zebo jokes that he should captain Ireland after Rory Best retirement

Simon Zebo has joked that he should become Ireland captain after the retirement of Rory Best following yesterday's loss to New Zealand.

The ex-Munster man been in international exile since moving to France to play for Racing 12 in the Top 14, but apparently wants to return to the side.

When Joe.ie put out a tweet asking for who fans would like as the next Ireland captain, the 29-year-old simply responded 'Zebo'.

However, he would first need to return to the provincial system, due to an unwritten IRFU rule that means no player will be selected for the national team as long as they are operating outside the country.

While Zebo has said that he wants to represent his country, it appears a return is unlikely, with the Cork native telling the Irish Times in January 'it is what it is'.

Ulster star Best retired from rugby after Ireland were knocked out of the World Cup yesterday morning, and with head coach Joe Schmidt leaving as well, it is uncertain who knew boss Andy Farrell will pick to be the new captain.
