Simon Thomas is to return to work with This Morning - 18 months after his wife's tragic death.

The former Sky Sports presenter is lined up to join the ITV show for a three-part segment called Pursuits of Happiness will begin on Wednesday, May 8, and will see him explore alternative therapies for mental health and wellbeing.

This will be the first time Simon has worked as a presenter since Gemma Thomas died in November 2017, just three days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.

Gemma, who is survived by the couples nine-year-old son Ethan, was just 40 years old.

Simon tweeted the news saying: "The last few weeks I have been filming for @thismorning Making a series on #mentalhealth and wellbeing.

"It's been a long road back to being able to stand in front of a camera again, but I hope this is a series that will challenge people as much as it inspires."

In the films Simon tries cold water ­swimming, which is thought to help depression, and equestrian therapy among others.

Martin Frizell, editor of This Morning, told  The Mirror : "This series will be Simon’s first step in returning to his presenting career and will focus on a subject matter that changed his life for ever."

Simon has continued to speak openly about the loss of his wife and how he has adopted to life as single dad to his young son.

The 46-year-old, who quit Sky Sports last April, has regularly appeared on TV to talk about Gemma, including with Ethan in December 2018.

They appeared on Good Morning Britain together for the first time and was praised for his courage and bravery.

During the interview, Ethan was asked how he was coping to which he replied to his dad: "I'm still sad, but at least I still have you."

Pursuits of Happiness starts on May 8 on This Morning, on ITV at 10.30am.
