Simon Smith provides an update on Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka's recovery from injury

Martin Dubravka's recovery from injury is taking slightly longer than expected, it has been revealed.

It was reported last week that Dubravka, who has missed the entire 2020/21 campaign so far, had suffered a setback in his recovery from an operation on his heel that may delay his return until December.

Such a prognosis would rule Dubravka out for at least Newcastle's next four matches, as well as Slovakia's crucial EURO 2020 play-off against Northern Ireland next month.

And now Newcastle United goalkeeper coach Simon Smith has confirmed as much, insisting Dubravka is working hard in the gym in order to aid his recovery.

"Martin's injury is taking slightly longer than expected," Smith tweeted.

"But anyone who has suffered from 'plantar fasciitis' knows, it takes time.

"He is working hard in the gym to maintain fitness and I am looking forward to having him back on the grass asap."

Dubravka has been Newcastle's most consistent performer since joining the club from Sparta Prague in January 2018 but could face a battle to reclaim his number one spot when he returns.

Karl Darlow has excelled in his absence and has statistically been the best goalkeeper in the Premier League so far this term.
