Simon Mignolet delivers classy message to Liverpool Super Cup hero Adrian

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has issued a classy message of congratulations to Adrian, his replacement at Anfield, after the new boy was the Reds penalty hero in the UEFA Super Cup victory over Chelsea.

On his first start for the club the Spaniard saved Tammy Abraham's spot-kick with his legs to deliver a 5-4 shoot-out success for Jurgen Klopp's side after a 2-2 draw with the Londoners at Istanbul club Besiktas' Vodafone Park stadium.

Major honours eluded Mignolet during his six-year stint at Liverpool between 2013-19 and he had to watch on helplessly from the sidelines when Loris Karius was preferred to him for the 2018 Champions League final and cost the Reds the cup with a couple of glaring errors in a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

While the Belgium international struggled to accept that the German was a better choice than himself, after a season of being understudy to Alisson he conceded that his time was up at Anfield this summer and returned to his homeland to join Club Brugge.

Unable to dislodge the Brazil number one, the 31-year-old understandably didn't fancy another year on the sidelines but after a leg injury forced Alisson off the pitch in Liverpool's opening Premier League fixture of the campaign, a 4-1 victory over newly-promoted Norwich City, Adrian was thrust into the action far earlier than he could have expected.

Mignolet, who could be forgiven for wondering that it could have been him now taking the plaudits following another memorable European night for the Reds in Istanbul but is instead preparing for Brugge's Jupiler League fixture at home to Eupen on Friday night, took to Instagram to reply to Adrian's post celebrating the cup win with the message: “Well done mate.”
