Simon Mignolet believes Alisson is struggling with same problem he had at Liverpool

Simon Mignolet believes Alisson's inconsistent form this season is due to the absence of Virgil van Dijk through injury.

Liverpool have endured a torrid season with their hopes of defending the Premier League title swiftly unravelling in 2021 after losing the likes of the Dutchman to serious injury.

Alisson has had his only brief spells out of the side through injury himself, as well as compassionate leave, and, like many of his team-mates has not been been at his best for the majority of the campaign.

Keeping just seven Premier League clean sheets this season, the goalkeeper has made high-profile errors against Manchester City, Leicester City and Aston Villa, as well as Real Madrid in the Champions League, in recent weeks.

And former Reds goalkeeper Mignolet believe such mistakes are simply down to the absence of Van Dijk, who has been sidelined since October, highlighting the immediate impact Liverpool's number four had on the side when joining in January 2018.

“That (Alisson’s form) will have several reasons,” he told De Tribune, cited by Sport Witness.

“On the one hand, he has had a few injuries, but there is also the fact that they have been missing Virgil van Dijk for almost the whole season.

“That’s a chunk of stability that’s gone anyway. That was actually already a difference when I was there. Van Dijk came when I ended up on the bench.

“From the moment he started playing, we stopped goals. Liverpool with or without him is a huge difference, I think.”
