Simon Kjaer on the emotional Christian Eriksen memories Scotland brought up as hero Denmark captain reflects on Euro 2020 horror

Hero Denmark captain Simon Kjaer admits he was shaken taking the field against Scotland just months after he helped save the life of Christian Eriksen.

The Inter star collapsed with a heart attack during his nation's Euro 2020 opener against Finland, with millions of viewers watching on horrified at home.

Skipper Kjaer reacted quickly though, performing CPR on his stricken team-mate before medical professionals attended to the fallen midfielder.

The Danes would eventually go all the way to the semi-finals, but the Milan defender admits returning to the stadium in Copenhagen to face Scotland brought everything flooding back.

Kjaer recalled in an interview with Bild: "There was one day, maybe two, where I didn't think about it but not now. It has become part of us.

"When we played Scotland in the World Cup qualifiers it was normal when we arrived at the Parkenstadion, but then the bad memories came flooding back.

"I had to take it step by step.

"First in the warm-up, then at the national anthems it all shook me a little bit on a personal level.

"But when we started playing, the feeling was similar to what we saw against Belgium and Russia at the European Championships: in this stadium you will feel safe and protected like nowhere else in the world."

Eriksen remains an Inter player, and after being fitted with a pacemaker there's the chance he could return to the pitch.

However, Serie A rules don't allow for players to play with the devices fitted so Kjaer may never face his team-mate in the derby again.

But he insists playing with Eriksen for his country or against him for club is very much of secondary importance.

Kjaer said: "I've said it hundreds of times and I'll say it hundreds of times more: the only thing that matters is that Christian is okay.

"Everything else is not important to me."
