Simon Jordan's bizarre latest attack on former Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez

Former Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez 'is in the Rafa Benitez business' and only uses clubs as 'stepping stones' to further his own career.

That is the view of talkSPORT presenter Simon Jordan, who has criticised the 61-year-old ahead of his potential appointment at Everton.

News of the Toffees' decision to reportedly offer the job to the former Liverpool boss has provoked outrage among fans and pundits.

Benitez has been out of work since leaving Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Pro in January, and has stressed his desire to return to the Premier League.

The vacant post at Goodison Park following Carlo Ancelotti's shock return to Real Madrid provides an ideal opportunity for the ex-Magpies boss to work close to his family's home in the North West.

However, furious Everton supporters have criticised the expected announcement and questioned whether Benitez's CV in the last decade warrants the position.

Radio host Jordan is one of several broadcasters and pundits to regularly question the former manager's standing amongst the Toon Army since leaving St James' Park in the summer of 2019.

The Spaniard's top-flight record after guiding the Magpies back to the Premier League at the first attempt is frequently cited in debates over current head coach Steve Bruce's performance in the role.

Jordan does not believe Benitez's career 'is in the ascendancy' and has questioned the Toffees' logic in potentially appointing the former Liverpool manager.

He told talkSPORT : “I bet he is keen because it’s an opportunity for him and Rafa Benitez is in the Rafa Benitez business.

“Everton have got to decide whether they’re going to be a big club and have a go or if they’re going to look like a club that’s getting Hollywood signings that don’t make a lot of sense.

“Benitez, he uses clubs as a stepping stone. He did a decent job at Newcastle. I don’t think his career is in the ascendancy.

“He didn’t go to China to further his football knowledge, he went to China to get paid a big bag of money.

“It hasn’t worked over there because the Chinese league has fallen apart and the quality has dropped. He now wants to come back [to the Premier League].”
