Simon Jordan explains what Newcastle United's biggest problem is under Steve Bruce

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan says Newcastle United do not have the players needed to play the way their fans desire.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce has come under a lot of pressure from fans due to his style of football, which often sees the side rank at the bottom of the Premier League for attacking stats.

For a person that called Magpies star Ryan Fraser 'a turd' for the way he left Bournemouth, Jordan offered a surprisingly considered opinion over fans' criticism of Bruce.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan debated the merits of Danny Murphy's article criticising Newcastle fans.

The controversial pundit accepted Newcastle fans' desire to see a better style of football but argued that the problem is not Bruce but the quality of players he has at his disposal.

He said: "Newcastle fans have a desire to see their team play in a certain way. Their biggest problem is with Mike Ashley.

"Steve Bruce was a Mike Ashley appointment and - Newcastle fans will be enraged - I don't see the style of play under Rafa Benitez was so wonderful to look at.

"So the notion that Rafa Benitez was the hero because he went up against Mike Ashley and he got them out the Championship, which I believe Steve Bruce would have done if the roles had been swapped.

"At times Newcastle look a decent side. I thought they were dreadful against Brighton earlier on in the season.

"I've seen them when Saint-Maximin has been in full flow and they've looked a very decent side but Newcastle fans have a right and an ambition to see expansive football in the Premier League.

"They don't want to see expansive football getting them relegated to the Championship. They want to see top quality players playing for Newcastle.

"Callum Wilson's gone up there and been a success, he's got Almiron playing better and achieving things. I think, the personnel he's got, he's got them running at 90-95 per cent capacity. Newcastle need better players.

"Steve Bruce is a decent manager operating at a decent level, he went in there and a large proportion of Newcastle fans weren't going to give him the benefit of the doubt and haven't changed their mind. Some of the way Newcastle have played has helped them with that mindset.

"I do feel Danny's article is probably about right, what is it do you expect? Yes, you want more expansive play but he doesn't have the squad or the personnel for it."
