Simon Hart to succeed Alun Cairns as Welsh Secretary, Downing Street announces

Simon Hart has been named Secretary of State for Wales, succeeding Alun Cairns in the role, Downing Street has confirmed.

The appointment is the first of Boris Johnson's Cabinet reshuffle after winning last week's election.

The MP for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire replaces Mr Cairns, who was forced to stand down over his links to an aide accused of sabotaging a rape trial.

Mr Hart was previously a junior minister at the Cabinet Office and his promotion marks his first entry to the cabinet.

Mr Johnson is expected to carry out a wider re-shuffle of his top team in February, with reports that up to a third of his top team could go.

Mr Johnson is set to announce a number of new appointments to his inner circle in coming days, as he sets himself up in Government after winning a landslide.

It comes amid massive shake up in the ranks of the House of Commons following Thursday's vote, with an intake of 139 new MPs due to officially start work this week.
