Simon Harris says getting a Brexit deal will be 'extremely difficult but not impossible' ahead of Leo Varadkar's meeting with Boris Johnson

Health Minister Simon Harris says getting a Brexit deal will be "difficult but not impossible" ahead of Leo Varadkar's meeting with Boris Johnson.

The Taoiseach and the British Prime Minister will attempt to hammer out a deal at a secret venue in the UK today.

It's believed the meeting will take place in Liverpool which is seen as a "neutral" venue for both parties.

Speaking on Morning Ireland on RTE Radio 1, he said: "I think it's an opportunity for two men to check in, to share views about where we're at and most importantly, for the Taoiseach to reiterate the Irish position which has been remarkably consistent over the last three years in relation to what it would require to get a Brexit deal.

"The Irish position has not changed, the British position may have, getting a deal may be extremely difficult but not impossible.

"And I think it's entirely appropriate that the Taoiseach continues to engage with everyone and anyone he can in the run-up to the European Council."

The Minister for Health also urged people to get the flu vaccine on Morning Ireland today.

He said: "I am here today to encourage everybody to take up the flu vaccine, particularly those in vulnerable categories.

"We see about 200-500 deaths each year from the flu, this is not the common cold, it is not the man flu that sometimes people joke about, it is a deadly illness that kills up to 500 people in our country every year.

"We have seen very significant increases in the uptake rate for both over 65s and also for healthcare professionals.

"Last year, about 53% of healthcare professionals got the flu vaccine, thats up about 10% on the previous year but it's nowhere near high enough.

"This morning I'll be meeting with healthcare professionals from across the country, encouraging them in their own hospitals and their own community organisations to put in place plans that will help them increase the rate further.

Mr Harris added that there is a new vaccine which protects against four strains of flu available this year.

He added that this vaccine will deal with all of the most common types of flu.
