Simon Harris declares a 'day of hope and optimism' ahead of lockdown announcement

Smiling Simon Harris has given an upbeat summary on the way into Cabinet.

He said today will be “a day of hope and optimism.”

The Minister for Higher Education stopped briefly to talk to reporters on the way into the crunch meeting that will see mass reopenings of society announced later today.

Mr Harris was Minister for Health during some of the toughest times of the pandemic, up to last June, so he has seen his fair share of bad days in Covid news.

But today he was happy to be able to reveal there will be good news coming out later.

Mr Harris said: “It’s good to see a bit of hope around here again.

“We’ve been in here (Government Buildings) too many nights in the past where there were a lot of dark and difficult decisions to be made so it’s good to have a day of hope and optimism again.”

The Cabinet is sitting for a special session this afternoon to sign off on the major plan for reopening Ireland over the summer months.

It will signal the beginning of the end of a gruelling four month lockdown and a deadly third wave of Covid that has claimed almost 5,000 lives in total over the past 14 months.
