Simon Harris confirms beaches and graveyards are open but public need to 'cop on'

The Health Minister has confirmed beaches and graveyards are back open to the public.

Simon Harris said he is both "pleased and nervous" as today, May 18, marks the first day lifting of lockdown restrictions.

He said people can exercise by the sea again and visit the graves of loved ones - but warned social distancing must be practiced if we are to see more measures lifted for phase two of reopening the country on June 8.

He said: "From today, beaches are now open and you can take exercise within your five kilometres as long as you practice social distancing when you get there."

He added: "So a cemetery is obviously an outdoor area so we believed from a public health point of view it would be perfectly safe to open cemeteries from today.

"Obviously I think these are matters for local authorities but again, there needs to be compassion and cop on shown here.

"It's very important when people go to the cemeteries to practice social distancing and the five kilometre limit still does apply."

In terms of sport, pitches, tennis courts and golf courses can now reopen.

However, Mr Harris shut down the idea that people can travel beyond the 5km travel limit to use these facilities.

He told Morning Ireland: "You do it for golf and then people are going to say the playground is seven kilometres away.

"And people are going to say 'can I do it for that?' And then people will say can I do it for this shop and that shop.

"It's the cumulative effect of all that movement and extra movement brings about extra risks."
