Simon Deli makes Rangers ambition claim as he explains Club Brugge transfer decision

Former Rangers target Simon Deli has claimed he turned down a move to Glasgow because he felt Club Brugge were more ambitious.

The defender claims he was wanted by Steven Gerrard in the summer but decided to join the Belgian outfit instead on a three-year deal from Slavia Prague.

Rangers ended up signing Filip Helander from Bologna but the Swede has missed the last two months with a foot injury leaving the Ibrox side with just Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and George Edmundson as first team centrebacks.

And Deli admits Rangers was a big opportunity for him but he felt that moving to Club Brugge was better for him.

He told Nord Eclair:"Last summer, I had three main options.

"Either I stayed [at Slavia Prague] with a great wage and the assurance of being captain, or I left for Rangers or Club Brugge to take up a new challenge.

“Club Brugge was a more attractive, more ambitious prospect for me. That's why I went for it."

The Ivory Coast defender started his career in his homeland with Africa Sports before joining Sparta Prague and then moving onto Slavia.

The 28-year-old has picked up 14 caps for his country and has made 20 appearances in all competitions for Club Brugge since joining in the summer.
