Simon Cowell's proposal was due to 'life-changing accident', his brother says

Simon Cowell’s brother Tony believes their late mum Julie would have been delighted at the news her eldest son is set to marry at 62.

He said: “She would have been overjoyed. She wanted him to settle down.

“I picture her looking down, saying, ‘About time, Simon’.” Simon proposed to Lauren, 44, in Barbados on Christmas Eve.

Referring to his e-bike accident in 2020 when he broke his back, Tony added: “I believe that accident was the catalyst for Simon. He began to think about his future, and who to share it with.

“I am very fond of Lauren; she is both a caring mum and a loyal companion to Simon. She is constantly reaching out to all our family; and was incredibly supportive to all of us following our mum’s death in 2015.”

Speculating about when their wedding could happen, Tony added in Best Magazine: “It will be interesting to see whether Simon will choose a lavish showbiz wedding, or a quiet family affair. Lauren may well favour a glitzy celebrity do.

"But I’m certain Simon would be happier with a private ceremony. I’m sure the wedding will be held in London. As for the date, well I’ve not been told that, yet. However, psychic Sally Morgan predicts a May wedding for the happy couple!”

Cowell’s engagement was the talk of the opening day’s Britain’s Got Talent auditions, with one act even incorporating a proposal into their act.

The try outs at the London Palladium were the first for two years and having an audience back made it an emotional experience too.

An emotional Ant McPartlin told the audience: “Excuse me while I go and cry.”

David Williams couldn't resist having a dig at Simon for taking so long to propose to Lauren Silverman.

After one act incorporated their engagement into a London Palladium audition on Sunday, David joked: “It was good you brought it up to date with the engagement. I mean, they only had a kid seven years ago. He took his time.”

Having none of it, Simon hit back with “hopefully mine will last longer than yours, David”, in reference to his fellow judge’s five-year marriage to supermodel Lara Stone.
