Saturday night’s Britain’s Got Talent took an unexpected detour when Simon Cowell found himself battling more than just tough decisions – he had to calm down a wildly overexcited live audience who were desperate for more Golden Buzzer moments.
The drama kicked off just minutes into the second live semi-final on 3 May. Operatic performer John Pierce had just wowed the judges when the crowd suddenly erupted into chants of “Press the gold!”, making it clear they weren’t ready for the moment to pass, reported Hello! Magazine.
Simon, visibly irritated, tried to carry on with his critique, but the noise only got louder. Turning to the crowd, he snapped, “I can hear you!” to regain control. It was clear the audience wanted another Golden Buzzer moment, despite Simon already having used his only hit of the golden glory earlier in the show to send 11-year-old guitar prodigy Olly Pearson straight through to the final.
The tension flared again later when the Japanese dance troupe Cheer’s Re Mans lit up the stage with a high-energy performance. Once more, the audience began chanting for Simon to hit the Golden Buzzer. Teasing the crowd, Simon joked: “I don’t have another one. I could try,” and cheekily hovered over the buzzer, knowing full well it was no longer active.
Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon quickly intervened, while Ant and Dec stepped in to remind everyone that the button had already been “disabled.” Dec added with a grin: “It’s a lovely idea, but if you press it, nothing happens.” Still, the crowd booed as Simon shrugged and said, “They asked me to.”
But while the studio audience was loving the drama, viewers at home weren’t so amused. Social media lit up with complaints that the shouting was ruining the show. One frustrated viewer posted: “Can’t hear what Simon is saying with the audience screaming.” Another compared the chaos to a football match.
Others criticised the Golden Buzzer system itself, calling it confusing and poorly timed. “The golden buzzer is a stupid system,” wrote one fan. “You don’t know what’s coming next, and the audience would buzz them all if they could.”
Despite the mayhem, the show carried on and confirmed two more acts heading to the final – young talent Olly Pearson and vocalist Stacey Leadbeatter, who won over the public with her powerful performance.
With more semi-finals still to come, one thing’s for sure: the BGT crowd isn’t afraid to make themselves heard – whether Simon likes it or not.
