Simon Cowell explains real reason behind X Factor's 'celebrity' shake-up

Simon Cowell has revealed why he felt he had no choice but to transform The X Factor for its 2019 return.

The talent show mogul stunned fans last year by announcing that the long-running show would be given a makeover.

Explaining his decision, Simon admitted that that the singing contest had become too focused on throwing cash at the ever-changing judging panel and lost sight of what it was really about, the auditionees.

Among the stars gracing the ever rotating panelists in recent years have been Robbie Williams and his wife Ayda Field, Nicole Scherzinger, Mel B, Kelly Rowland and Gary Barlow.

Discussing the fees involved, Simon told The Sun: "It was no secret it was millions and millions of pounds. I am going to be really honest with you - and this is no disrespect to Robbie or anyone else who has been on the panel - my focus this year is mainly about the people who are coming on the show to compete.

'I'm probably talking myself out of a job here, but I think there has been so much emphasis on the judges.

"We've lost sight of the contestants. It got crazy, I never thought this would happen 20 years ago, when I started this show, that we would be talking more about the judges than the contestants, it's complete nonsense. "

This year Simon will be giving viewers a new format which will see past contestants and celebrities competing.

It comes after the talent competition hit an all time low on ratings last year.

Robbie Williams and his wife Ayda Williams announced last month that they wouldn't be returning to the new series following reports their £10million pay packet wouldn't be increased.

While Simon admitted he's still not sure if Louis Tomlinson will be back.

The decision to switch-up the show isn't the only change Simon is embracing.

The dad revealed that he's become vegan following his health scare in October 2017.

After tumbling down the stairs in his London mansion, Simon has now cut out meat, dairy, sugar and wheat from his diet.

He told The Sun: "Within 24 hours I changed my diet and I've not looked back since. You feel better, you look better."
