Simon Cowell breaks back in Malibu bike accident and will undergo surgery

Music mogul Simon Cowell is to undergo surgery after breaking his back during a bike accident.

The talent show star, 60, was testing an electric bicycle at his home in Malibu, California, when he hurt himself.

"Simon had a fall from his bike on Saturday afternoon whilst testing his new electric bike in the courtyard at his house in Malibu with his family," a spokesperson for Simon told The Hollywood Reporter.

"He hurt his back and was taken to the hospital. He's doing fine, he's under observation and is in the best possible hands."

The spokesperson added: "Simon has broken his back and will be having surgery this evening."

Simon had been scheduled to return to work on America's Got Talent next week with the first live show due to air on August 11, the Mirror reports.

Last month, it was announced that Simon has taken full control of AGT and The X Factor after he agreed to buy out Sony Music Entertainment's stake in the venture.

The star turned to biking after embracing a new healthier lifestyle that his seen him lost over four stone in the last few years.

Simon, who has been looking noticeably trimmer, said recently he found being in lockdown very helpful for sticking to his clean eating regime.

"I’m doing a bit of cooking. I’m exercising. Funny enough, more during this time as well, sticking to the diet,” he told Extra.

"The only difficult thing is when Eric orders a pizza… That’s the number one thing I miss."

Simon has been spending lockdown with his girlfriend Lauren Silverman and six-year-old son Eric as well as Lauren's 14-year-old son Adam from a previous relationship.
