Simon Cowell apologises to Britain's Got Talent singer Jai McDowall

Music boss Simon Cowell has apologised after admitting he did not offer "any support" to former Britain's Got Talent winner Jai McDowall.

The pair reunited when the Scottish singer appeared as contestant on Britain's Got Talent: The Champions.

Jai won the ITV talent show in 2011 but was dropped the following year by Simon's record label after the release of his debut album Believe.

Ahead of his performance on The Champions Jai said: "When I got the record deal it was dream come true and to have it all taken away one one of the hardest things I've had to deal with.

"That is why I'm on Britain's Got Talent: The Champions, to show Simon I was a worthy winner and I deserve a second chance."

And Jai wowed with an emotional rendition of I'll Never Love Again from A Star Is Born.

David Walliams said: "I've always felt you were a bit overlooked as a winner which is a bit unfair as tonight you've proved you are one of the best winners Britain's Got Talent has ever had."

Amanda Holden added: "I don't think you were properly celebrated as a winner of our show."

"What I've enjoyed about tonight is seeing how you've grown as a performer."

And Simon told him: "I remember my issue or problem at the time was I was struggling to find out where you fitted into the market and the fact that I never gave you any support during or after the  show and you have the guts to come back and proved a point to me which is that you've grown in stature, you've grown in confidence."

He added: "The song was immaculate, it was a great performance.

"And I owe you an apology for not giving you the support I should have given you at the time, but I also respect the fact that you've come back to make me look like an idiot. So here is standing ovation I should have given you."
