Simon Coveney deletes tweet after RTE's Reeling in the Years brings it to light

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has deleted a tweet that was critical of former Taosieach Brian Cowen.

The tweet was in reference to an infamous interview that Cowen gave to Morning Ireland in 2010.

During the interview, the then Taoiseach sounded hoarse and under the weather. The Laois-Offaly TD also briefly confused the Croke Park Agreement with the Good Friday Agreement and made numerous other slips.

After the interview aired, the former leader of Fianna Fàil was accused of being either drunk or hungover during the conversation with Cathal MacCoille on RTÉ’s flagship morning radio programme.

The former Taoiseach has always denied that he was either drunk or hungover.

However, the incident has reentered the public discourse following the latest episode of Reeling In the Years which featured Coveney's tweet and made an overt reference to it in the show's text.

The tweet reads: "God, what an uninspiring interview by Taoiseach this morning. He sounded half way between drunk and hungover and totally disinterested..."

Coveney posted that message on September 14, 2010.

During the video segment which featured on Reeling In The Years, journalist Ursula Halligan asks Cowen: "You must be aware that radio programmes and the Internet are alive with the belief that you were either drunk or hungover during the Morning Ireland show?"

At this point, Cowen replies by saying: "Absolutely not, it's not true. It's ridiculous."

Halligan interjects and adds: "But Taoiseach, you did not sound on top form?" to which Cowen replies: "No, I had a good conversation as usual with Cathal. That's uncalled for."

The former Taoiseach has always denied that he was either drunk or hungover.
