Silverstream 'attempted murder' being investigated amid claims man tried to set fire to neighbour

The police have made an arrest after a man is alleged to have tried to set one of his neighbours on fire.

In a brief statement issued on Tuesday evening, the PSNI said detectives “are investigating an incident outside a house in the Silverstream Avenue area of north Belfast on Tuesday 21st April”.

A police spokesman added: “Police received a report at around 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoon that a man had doused a male neighbour with some form of accelerant and then attempted to set it alight.

“The neighbour managed to evade his attacker however and the suspect was arrested by police a short time later. The 29 year old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in custody assisting officers with their enquiries.

“Detectives would ask anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have mobile phone footage to contact them at Musgrave on 101 quoting reference number 1144 21/04/20.”

The police added that potential witnesses can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
