Silverstone agree deal in principle to hold two Formula 1 races behind closed doors this summer

Silverstone has agreed a deal to host two Formula 1 grands prix this summer as part of the sport’s re-jigged calendar.

The races would be held without fans and, like all elite sport in the UK, remain subject to government approval.

The track’s managing director Stuart Pringle said: “I am delighted to confirm that Silverstone and Formula 1 have reached an agreement to hold two races behind closed doors this summer.

“However, these races will be subject to government approval, as our priority is the safety of all involved and strict compliance with Covid-19 regulations.”

The F1 season had been due to start in Australia on March 15, but has been pushed back until July because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Australian, French and Monaco races have been cancelled outright with a further seven legs of the circuit currently suspended.

Organisers are still hoping to stage a reduced season of between 15-18 races, beginning with two on back-to-back weekends in Austria at the start of July. Holding multiple races in some locations will limit the amount of travel needed to complete the season.

While the UK government has suggested elite sport could be able to return behind closed doors as early as June 1, significant logistical obstacles remain, in particular the proposed 14-day quarantine period for new arrivals into the country.
