
Long icicles hang from a crane-shaped fountain in Hibiya Park in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, on Wednesday, catching the eyes of passersby. Wednesday was the first day of Daikan, the coldest of the 24 seasonal divisions of the traditional calendar. The mercury fell to around zero in central Tokyo early in the morning. The Japan Meteorological Agency says the temperature is forecast to rise to 10 C or more in the Kanto region later this week.
