Silver success for West Lothian martial arts club in national championship

Kuk Sool Won Bathgate are celebrating silver success after finishing second in the Scottish Championship - which the club hosted.

Bathgate Academy was the setting for the World Kuk Sool Association (WKSA) Scottish Championship with over 300 competitors from Scotland and further afield competing for medals across the two day event.

A total of over 30 clubs from Scotland, the rest of the United Kingdom and even Germany and The Netherlands took part in the prestigious event with competitors taking part in multiple divisions including sparring, weapons and self defence.

Points were awarded to medal winners which were then combined to award the club with the highest points with Bathgate proudly finishing second, just behind Liverpool with fellow West Lothian club, Winchburgh, taking third place.

Kuk Sool Won Bathgate coach, Master Graham, admitted he was delighted with his club’s achievements and the overall success of the competition.

He commented: “I’m so proud of all of our competitors with every single one of our students picking up at least one medal with several students picking up multiple gold medals.

“The Liverpool club has been dominant at this competition for years so to come within touching distance of them in the overall points and finish in second place is a massive achievement, moving up from fifth place last year.”

He added: “We have been able to enhance our training since moving to our new full-time purpose fitted facility on Blackburn Road last year and I think that has paid off at this competition.”

“I’m also really proud of two of my students, Nichola and Alan Steedman who opened a club in Winchburgh. In their first Scottish Championship they were able to secure third place.”

Reflecting on Bathgate hosting the event, he added: “This was a fantastic event which welcomed competitors from age four to 64 to Bathgate and we were delighted to be able to host the event for a second year in Bathgate Academy.

“We were also so pleased that the Grandmaster of the art, 10th Dahn, In Hyuk Suh was able to join us from Houston Texas and also celebrate his 85th birthday while he was here.”
