Silver Jubilee Bridge event postponed due to rise in coronavirus delta variant cases

Fears over rising cases of the Delta Covid variant have led to a major event on the Silver Jubilee Bridge being postponed this weekend.

Billed as a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’, the ‘bridge takeover’ had been pencilled in for this Saturday as part of Halton’s Borough of Culture 2021 celebrations and to mark the iconic structure’s 60 th birthday.

It had been planned for attendees to cross the bridge in stages, with those taking part divided into sections such as new mums with prams, or teenagers wanting to make a fashion statement.

Concerns over Covid had already ruled out the possibility of crowds congregating to watch, with the crossing due to be streamed live on YouTube instead.

But now organisers said the whole thing has had to be put on hold due to fears over rising Delta variant Covid numbers.

A Halton Council spokesman said: “It is with much regret that, following advice from Public Health, the council has taken the difficult decision to postpone the Borough of Culture Bridge Takeover event on Saturday, June 26.

“Halton, along with the other areas of the Liverpool City Region, Cheshire and much of the North West, is currently a Covid ‘Enhanced Response Area’ with

"Covid infection rates still rising quickly in Halton and neighbouring areas, mainly as a result of the Delta variant.

“We would like to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly and professionally to put the event together, and all the participants who had come forward to help make it a special day.

“We will be looking to rearrange the event at a later date.”
