Silver Ferns beat the Diamonds to win Quad Series title

New Zealand has finished the Quad Series on a high, beating Australia 57-47 in Invercargill to claim the title.

Roared on by a vocal crowd, the Silver Ferns got the jump on their arch-rivals, racing out to an 18-10 lead after the first quarter.

The pressure was on in the second quarter, with both sides producing several poor handling errors.

The Diamonds strung a few goals together early in the term, but could not take advantage. They outscored New Zealand 14-13, but still trailed 31-24 going into half-time.

The intensity remained high after the main break, with New Zealand's lead fluctuating between five and eight points for most of the third quarter.

The Diamonds could not put a surge together to get within striking distance, and the Silver Ferns pulled further ahead late in the quarter, to get to three-quarter time with a 44-33 lead.

New Zealand extended the lead to a game-high 13 goals early in the final term, and although the Diamonds reduced the deficit and kept pushing until the end, they had too much ground to make up.

Goal shooter Te Paea Selby-Rickit was the star for New Zealand, with 35 goals out of 41 attempts. Caitlin Bassett led the way for the Diamonds, with 22/24.

The Silver Ferns also had backup, with 17 goals from goal attack Bailey Mes and five goals from Maia Wilson, compared to 10 goals from Australia's Caitlin Thwaites, 11 from Tegan Philip and four goals from teammate Gretel Tippett.

The series was extremely competitive, with Australia beating England and South Africa, the Silver Ferns beating South Africa but the English stunning New Zealand before the final game between the two old rivals.

In the earlier game on Sunday, South Africa sprung another surprise, beating England 54-51, with goal shooter Lenize Potgieter starring, converting 43 goals from 45 shots.

Goal attack Helen Housby led the way for England, with 26/29 attempts.
