Silent walk set to take place in Bristol this weekend cancelled due to Storm Dennis

A remembrance walk which was due to take place in Bristol this weekend, in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower, has been postponed as a result of Storm Dennis approaching.

Bristol4Grenfell had planned the silent walk for February 15, to stand in solidarity with the 72 people whose lives were claimed by the Grenfell fire three years ago, as well as those who are mourning their loved ones.

During the tragic incident at the 24-storey tower block in Kensington more than 70 were also injured. The aim of the walk on February 15 was to highlight the launch of phase two of the inquiry, which will attempt to explain why the disaster happened.

Due to the Met Office issuing two yellow weather warnings for strong winds and rain as Storm Dennis approaches, the organisers of Bristol4Grenfell have had to postpone the silent walk until March 15.

The walk was due to start at The Fountains in Broad Quay and the group was potentially going to be making its way around the Horsefair, up through Castle Park, back to the Fountains and up to College Green.

Amy G (Matthew Phillip Long)

Amy, a contemporary circus theatre performer and Bristol4Grenfell organiser, said: “We are very sad that we had to take the decision of postponing the silent walk until next month.

“With the news of Storm Dennis approaching Somerset we came to the conclusion that this would be the safest option for all.

“However, rest be assured we will keep Grenfell in our thoughts and we will be walking here in Bristol again in March and are currently working towards making this an even bigger and more impactful event.”

The areas covered by the weather warnings (Met Office)

The storm is set to bring disruption to much of England and Wales this weekend.

The first warning for rain is in place from 12pm on Saturday (February 15) to 12pm the following day.

The second warning was put in place from 12pm on February 11 until 11.59pm on Saturday.

Gusts of 50mph are expected widely inland, with around 60 mph in places - this speed is likely to reach 60-70mph in coastal areas.

There is also a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations to road, rail, air and ferry services across Bristol.
