SILCHAR: Residents of Silchar, the southern Assam town, exasperated by the perennial flooding during the monsoon, have demanded immediate measures to address the problem.
Torrential rain for the past 24 days have inundated large parts of Silchar, which have remained waterlogged for days on end.
Authorities of Silchar municipal board launched an eviction drive in which a number of shops and concrete gates of houses constructed illegally over drains were dismantled on Wednesday and Thursday, said Silchar municipal board executive officer and CEO of district disaster management authority, Jessica Lalsim. The residents have also submitted a memorandum to an official who had come to inspect the situation.
President of Grahak Suraksha Samiti and a resident of this town Biplob Kumar Goswami said construction/repairing of roads without adhering to scientific guidelines and encroachment of roads are the prime reasons behind the waterlogging in Ambikapatty in particular. Apart from this, the absence of a proper drainage system is also to blame, he said. Haridas Dutta, general secretary of Nagarik Swartha Raksha Sangram Parishad, said the drains are brimming with trash which must be cleared for the water to flow smoothly.
