Sikh parade to light up Ballsbridge this weekend

A Sikh parade is set to take place this Sunday, April 24 from 10am to mark Vaisakhi 2022, a spring harvest festival for Sikhs and Hindus that originates in Northern India.

The parade is being put together by Gurudwara Guru Nanak Darbar Dublin, the only Gurudwara (place of worship for people of Sikh faith) in Ireland which is located on Serpentine Avenue in Dublin 4.

This is the third Sikh parade to take place in Dublin, with the first one kicking off the annual tradition in the city in 2018. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was called off both in 2020 and 2021.

Sikh communities celebrate festivals by holding public processions and sharing them with wider communties, and all Dubs are invited along to experience this delightful parade which has only grown since it first took place in Dublin.

Harminder, who is involved with Gurudwara Guru Nanak Darbar Dublin, said that the celebration is set to be bigger than previous years with the growing community coming along to take part.

Those heading along to the parade this Sunday are being advised to wear comfortable footwear and dress accordingly to the weather forecast.

Members of the Sikh community who are attending are also encouraged to dress in traditional Indian dress.

Over the last five years, the Sikhs who use the temple in Ballsbridge have been doing their part for the community by taking to the streets of Dublin city centre to hand out free food to anyone who wants it.
