Signs put on pub beer garden tables to stop people using them

A pub landlord has put signs of the outdoor tables to prevent people gathering in the garden and flouting social distancing guidelines.

It comes after groups of people gathered in the pub garden during the sunny weekend just gone.

Dan Obern, of The Pump House, previously told Bristol Live that he moved people on as soon as he saw that they were gathering around the premises.

The pub reopened last Friday as a shop selling bottles of beer, fresh fruit, vegetables and meat – but explicitly did not allow the use of its beer garden.

Around the Harbourside area of Bristol there has also been concerns surrounding the sale of alcohol and crowds which gathered over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Yesterday, the landlord of the Broken Dock pub defended its position.

Now, after The Pump House closed off its garden, signs have been put on its tables which say 'Please abide by proper social distancing measures. These tables are not for use by the general public'.

Mr Obern said: “It is a concern for us. It’s all dealt with now. We are only letting two people into our shop at a time.

“We’d been closed for seven weeks and we just reopened as a shop. There is only so much people can get from the Spar around the corner.

“We’ve been delivering necessities to elderly people stuck at home as well. We’ve been doing good. I’ve not had a day off in eight weeks.”
