Signs go up in windows of Nottingham's former Debenham's store

Signs have gone up in the windows of Nottingham's former Debenhams department store off Old Market Square.

The empty shop in Long Row, Nottingham, which was closed permanently on May 4, has had vinyl decorations placed in the store's windows.

Workers were seen placing snowflake decorations and the branding of Visit Nottinghamshire, the county's official tourism body, and Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID).

One of the signs read: "It's in Nottingham". And also linked to the websites of Visit Nottinghamshire and Nottingham (BID).

The 240-year-old high street retailer entered administration back in April 2019 and met its eventual demise in December 2020 when it entered liquidation.

The attempts to find a buyer failed, but its assets and brand were saved by the Boohoo Group for £55 million.

This meant, however, all high street outlets would be forced to close in a move online, as was the Long Row shop.

When Nottinghamshire Live spoke to shoppers in Nottingham they wanted the large store replaced quickly with smaller independent shops or another department store.

But retail expert Nelson Blackley has previously said luxury apartments, high-quality office space or student accommodation are more likely for the historic site.
