Signing off for the holiday: Community spirit keeps vulnerable safe in cold snap

That's all for me on the blog this week folks! As I said earlier – we'll have a few posts over the Christmas period but we'll be back to blogging as normal in the New Year.

With severe weather conditions set to continue into next week, Cardiff's Safer Capital partnership has today urged communities to work together with local services to make sure those at most risk during the cold spell, such as vulnerable and elderly neighbours, remain safe and warm.

The Safer Capital partnership includes Cardiff council, South Wales Police and other emergency services.

The team has been working tirelessly to try and minimise the impact brought on by the freezing temperatures and snow arctic conditions and now is calling on local communities to offer help those who are finding it difficult to leave their houses to collect essentials such as food, medicines and supplies to keep warm.

With more snow forecast for tomorrow, councillor Judith Woodman, who jointly chairs the Safer Capital partnership with chief superintendent Bob Tooby, said:

"Please make sure that you take care when out and about as conditions are obviously icy.

"As with the last cold snap, it was heartening to see communities pulling together to help one another and I strongly encourage this.

"If you can help any vulnerable or elderly neighbours, your offer of assistance is normally greatly appreciated as they often won't ask for help themselves.

"Make use of the portable salt grits located around the city. They are there for you to use locally, especially on areas which are not currently being gritted by lorries."It's also worthwhile making sure that you have useful items such as a torch, batteries and blankets stored in easy to locate places in the house in case you suffer power cuts."

Divisional Commander for Cardiff chief superintendent Bob Tooby said:

"Our priority is to provide a 24/7 emergency service to the people of Cardiff and we are working hard, with other emergency services and our partners at Safer Capital to meet the additional demands placed upon us.

"I would urge members of the public to consider whether or not their journey is absolutely necessary and to check the Traffic Wales website for updates on their route before leaving home.

"I would also urge those who have to travel to make use of main roads and avoid less used routes. Drivers should also allow extra time for their journey and ensure they allow an appropriate distance between them and the vehicle ahead."
