'Signing of the summer' - Arsenal fans rave over Edu's £116m double transfer deal plan

Arsenal fans have been reacting to a transfer claim involving sporting director Edu Gaspar.

The Gunners were active in the last summer transfer window, spending around £45million on Thomas Partey in a deal which hasn't quite bore fruit just yet.

And ahead of this summer, there is already talk Arsenal could pull off a number of big deals having shrunk their wage bill in January, offloading the likes of Mesut Ozil and Shkodran Mustafi.

One of the latest transfer claims has involved Real Sociedad's star winger Mikel Oyarzabal and teammate Mikel Merino, the latter being a former Newcastle United midfielder.

Arsenal transfers, Calum Chambers and looking to Olympiacos

The claim suggests Gunners technical director Edu has been in touch with agents over the pair ahead of a proposed move.

The problem with that proposed double deal is that Oyarzabal has a release clause worth £65million and Merino's is worth around £51million with the players under contract at La Real until 2024 and 2025 respectively.

That could make it a difficult challenge for Arsenal to pull off even on of the two transfers, particularly with Real Sociedad looking likely to qualify for the Europa League again next season, and indeed in with an outside chance of reaching the Champions League.

That could allow the Basque side to remain comfortable enough financially to stick to those release clauses, and they might just do that regardless given the importance of both players to Jon Mikel Arrieta plans.

Nevertheless, Arsenal fans would like to see their club try to persuade La Real to part ways with at least one of their stars.

Here's what some fans have had to say on Twitter.

Oyarzabal is still only 23 years of age but he has made a huge impression in La Liga and will more than likely be part of Luis Enrique's Spain squad for this summer's Euro 2020.

Merino, a left-footed midfielder, is also a Spain international and the 24-year-old has previous experience of the Premier League, spending time on loan and then permanently at Newcastle.

Speaking about his experience with the Magpies, Merino told The Guardian last month: "In Spain, heading on to the pitch you’re thinking about tactics, positions, the ball. In England, I didn’t think much about the ball; it was more about the battle.

"I am who I am because of the Premier League: it made me harder, stronger, taught me to take the hits. You have a perception of football and you get there and it’s not that: it’s more physical, more direct, the game doesn’t stop, these are men with enormous bodies. I understand why some can’t adapt.

“The league changes you. I remember Rafa [Benítez] telling me to play quickly, one or two touches. He said if they get to you, they’ll hit you or take the ball.”
