Signing free agent LB Thomas Davis makes perfect sense for Redskins

The Los Angeles Chargers released veteran linebacker Thomas Davis on Friday, making the 14-year pro a free agent once the market opens next week.

While many fans in Washington may have looked past this move as nothing to bat an eye at, Redskins head coach Ron Rivera definitely took notice. One of the staple players from his time with the Carolina Panthers is now available.

Davis played for 13 seasons with the Panthers, and he was present for all of Rivera’s tenure in Carolina. He played some of his best football when Rivera was the coach, and now he is faced with an opportunity to join up with his old leader, right when the Redskins happen to be in desperate need of a linebacker as well.

Of course, Davis’ age will play a factor in any future signing — he is 37-years-old and his best football is undoubtedly behind him. Still, As Rivera looks to change the culture in Washington, it will greatly help to have a veteran presence who knows that the coach wants leading the locker room. The Redskins were unable to convince TE Greg Olsen to fill that role, so it would make sense for them to go after Davis to do the same thing.
