Significant rise in Bristol's coronavirus cases as daily figure surges by 78 per cent

There have been a further 237 new coronavirus cases in Bristol today (October 20) - the city's biggest ever daily jump and 78 per cent higher than yesterday's figures.

Across the whole of the Bristol region, 381 people were diagnosed with the virus over the past 24 hours, according to the latest figures.

Week-on-week numbers have to continued to soar. Before today, the highest daily number was 164.

Bristol and its neighbouring three areas all saw a significant jump compared to infections reported on Monday.

South Gloucestershire reported a rise of 62, bringing its total to 1,700

While Bath and North East Somerset recorded an increase of 42, its total is 1,098.

And in North Somerset 40 positive lab tests were returned bringing its total is 1,479.

The UK's coronavirus death toll has risen by 241, while the number of new cases has surged by more than 21,000.

It is the highest daily increase in fatalities since June 4, and today's figure is nearly five times higher than the number announced last Tuesday.

University cases

The number of students at the University of Bristol who have tested for coronavirus is nearing a thousand, according to the latest figures.

A total of 996 students have tested positive at the university now, together with 16 members of staff, taking the total of confirmed cases at the university to 1,012.

The outbreak among the university's community was first confirmed on October 7 and there are now two student accommodation buildings in the city in lockdown due to the virus spreading there.
