Significant Covid-19 outbreak sees top English rugby match called off, players put into isolation and stadium shut down

Gloucester have been hit by an outbreak of Covid-19 cases resulting in Saturday’s west country Premiership derby with Bath at Kingsholm being called off.

The club have returned a number of positive Covid-19 tests in the last few days and members of their playing squad have been ruled out of the match due to these tests and contact tracing.

Following consultation with Public Health England, the decision has been taken to close both the club’s training ground and Kingsholm Stadium.

A Premiership Rugby spokesperson said: “Our priority is the health and safety of everyone involved with Gloucester Rugby and Bath Rugby and we will give the clubs any support they need.

“We wish everyone affected a full and speedy recovery.

“Neither Premiership Rugby nor the club will be naming any of the players or staff involved and we’d ask everyone to respect their privacy.”

Under competition regulations, the match between Louis Rees Zammit’s Gloucester and Taulupe Faletau’s Bath will be cancelled.

A Premiership Rugby panel will now be convened to determine the allocation of points.

It’s the latest rugby match to be called off due to Covid cases.

Last weekend, the Rainbow Cup meeting Ulster and the Scarlets was cancelled due to positive tests in the Ulster camp.
