Sign Olmo, beat Barcelona, Musiala verdict: Cesc Fabregas' key Chelsea transfer advice

Cesc Fabregas has offered a pearl of wisdom to Chelsea ahead of the January transfer window. The former Blues midfielder is currently playing for Serie B side Como FC but is consistently voicing his opinions on the footballing landscape via Twitter, and the playmaker opened up on social media once more.

After leaving Chelsea in 2019 Fabregas has continued to speak glowingly about his former club and also his former national side Spain too. Plenty has changed since his days at the top of European football though. Chelsea haven't won the league since he left and are sat in eighth, currently being managed by their fourth manager post-Fabregas.

As for Spain, they have also failed to impress since winning three straight major tournaments between 2008 and 2012 and were dumped out of the World Cup earlier this month by Morocco on penalties.

With that being said, the 35-year-old is one of the best footballing brains to pick and fans were treated to some tactical and transfer insight on Thursday evening. There were even small nuggets of advice for Graham Potter to take.

When asked which Spain player the Blues should sign he didn't tread around the subject, choosing an interesting name for Blues fans to digest. "Dani Olmo could be a great addition if Chelsea continues to play in this system," he replied. The 24-year-old is currently at RB Leipzig, a team Chelsea have become accustomed to dealing with recently after appointing their former directer Christopher Vivell earlier this week and also moving to agree a deal for Christopher Nkunku in 2023 as well.

Olmo was part of the Spain squad in Qatar under Luis Enrique but isn't a notrious goal contributer, only notching 19 in 106 matches in Germany. However, his ability to move between the lines as a No10 has attracted Barcelona previously. With a contract expiring in 2024 there would be an opening for Chelsea to make a move if they wanted to, and it could end with them beating their notorious Catalan transfer rivals after a summer of being second best with Xavi's side in the market.

At 24 Olmo still has plenty of room to develop, but Fabregas instead chose a former Chelsea academy star as the best young player at the moment, saying, "I really like Musiala from Bayern Munich. Too (top) talent, intelligent and it looks like he has great determination." Chelsea may feel they have seriously missed out on the German starlet. He left Cobham in 2019 despite being offered a new deal in England and has gone on to be one of the most impressive players this season with nine goals and seven assists in Bundesliga.

As for how he views football's developing tactics, Potter may be able to take a leaf from Fabregas' book. He offered his views on choreographed positional play, writing: "Attacking with structure is important to be able to be in good position for especially when the team loses the ball and avoid counterattacks. That doesn’t mean we should take the creativity away from the players, thing that we are seeing more and more in the game nowadays."

Chelsea themselves became too set in their ways under Tuchel and were often predictable and easy to shut down. Fabregas' very own creativity was often cited as an element missing from their game and Potter has found similar results after taking over, however, the former Arsenal captain also offered his tips to midfielders in this situation.

"Playing forward, break lines with passing," he started. "Analyse the pitch and the situation of your teammates before the ball comes to you. To have 95% accuracy and not be able to influence the game doesn’t mean anything to me."

The version of Fabregas that Chelsea had between 2014 and 2019 was one of the best pass-finding players in world football and is a style of player missing from Potter's current arsenal of weapons. Olmo could be that man, Musiala could too, but for now there's other players to work with.
