Having finished its operations for this season, the 16-meter-long sightseeing boat Garve was hoisted out of Lake Kurobe in Tateyama, Toyama Prefecture, on Monday and tucked away for a long winter's nap.
This evolution takes place around this time every year to prevent damage from freezing on the lake's surface. Lake Kurobe is surrounded by peaks of the Northern Alps, which already have a dusting of snow.
After being lifted up from the lake by a large crane, the boat was moved to its winter storage site inside the tunnel leading to Tateyama.
"When this is done, I feel that the severe winter here is approaching," said Tadashi Sakaki, 59, an official of Kanden Amenix Corp. which offers the boat tour.
The sightseeing cruises are scheduled to resume operations on June 1.
