Diners at The Little Harp pub caught sight of a dark shape in the water, travelling in the direction of the Pier towards the Marine Lake - prompting a number of rational explanations following a post on social media ranging from the carcass of a dead cow to a whale or dolphin.

However, a video sent to Bristol Live clearly reveals the source of the burgeoning theories - a large piece of driftwood.

Carol and Bob Fox, aged 69 and 63 respectively, from Redfield, captured video footage of the mysterious object which washed up on Berrow Beach, Burnham-on-Sea on Sunday (April 21).

The short clips captured by the couple show what appears to be a large branch floating onto the beach against a stunning bank holiday sunset, and eventually coming to rest on the sand.

The pair watched two similar objects wash down with the tides from the direction of Brean, and after closer inspection were happy to confirm that the water appeared to be free of elusive mythical creatures.
