Sighthill regeneration progress captured in drone footage

Newly released drone footage of the Sighthill regeneration development has given a flying look at how far the project has come so far.

The £250 million development is picking up pace with several key milestones already reached, including the opening of the Sighthill community schools campus.

When complete, the Sighthill Transformational Regeneration Area (TRA) will cover more than 50 hectares and will be a new neighbourhood within 15 minutes' walk from George Square.

The drone footage shows the scale of the development - which is the largest of its kind outside of London - and gives an idea of how the new neighbourhood will connect to the rest of the city.

The development includes almost 1,000 new homes, new parkland and green space, new road and pedestrian/ cyclist bridges connecting the city centre and new shops, businesses, a civic square and a canal terrace.

Over 2020, the project has seen the opening of the Sighthill community schools campus, the start of construction of the new homes, and the demolition of the former pedestrian bridge across the M8 paving the way for a new landmark pedestrian and cyclist bridge connecting Sighthill and North Glasgow to the nearby city centre.

Key road routes throughout the site are currently being developed and Sighthill Park is expected to be opened in the next few months.

Speaking at the end of last year, Councillor Kenny McLean, City Convener for Neighbourhoods, Housing and Public Realm at Glasgow City Council, said: “Sighthill is the prime example of what is - and what will be - happening in North Glasgow now and in the future, and it is pleasing to see such progress being made. The local community - and their new neighbours, who will be being welcomed in the coming years - can look forward to living in a fantastic neighbourhood, reconnected to the city centre and nearby areas.”

The Sighthill project is one of eight such TRAs in Glasgow, with partners Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Housing Association, and the Scottish Government forming the Transforming Communities: Glasgow (TC:G) partnership. The Sighthill TRA also benefits from Glasgow City Region City Deal funding from the Scottish and UK Governments.
