Sighs over Versailles

A scene from Versailles
A scene from the BBC2 show Versailles. Reader Serena Ralston reckons that the dialogue was ‘pure fromage’. Photograph: Canal+/BBC

John Crace is not alone in being baffled by Versailles (Digested week, 11 June). In the first episode, we were stumped by the terrible dialogue – and iffy sound quality – in the “wolves” scene in which Louis asked his brother “to watch his bag”. My daughter pointed out that it must surely have been a Louis Vuitton number, perhaps, we mused, accessorised with a nifty wallet. It was only later on that evening we both realised he’d said “back”. Either way, the dialogue was pure fromage. We gave up shortly afterwards as we couldn’t tell anyone apart – all those wigs and moustaches, on both men and women, didn’t help. Dommage all round, really.
