Side-splitting moment Edinburgh workmen try to lift van that was blocking tram

A hilarious video showing workmen trying to move a parked van from in front of a stuck Edinburgh tram has been posted to social media.

Edinburgh Live reported on Tuesday how a Leith-bound tram on the new Newhaven line became trapped behind the parked white transit.

Locals reported how the tram was blocked for more than 20 minutes unable to squeeze past. It follows a similar incident on the same road weeks ago while trams were being tested on the route.

Footage from the video shows three burly workmen attempting to move the van by hand. Footage shows them using brute force in a vain attempt to shift the vehicle.

One person replied to the video and said: "You really reap what you sow! They could have just done away with the parking spots, but nobody wants to upset the motoring mob in."

Whilst another person said: "I couldn't get my cat to the vet and had to pay an uber to take me. Not what I wanted on top of the vet bill."

This is not the first time that a tram has become stuck behind a vehicle, just a few weeks ago, on June 2, a tram had to be guided past a parked another parked van during a trial run of the line.

At the time Edinburgh Trams stated that they felt the incident was an isolated incident and that they did not anticipate this issue to cause problems moving forward.

A spokesperson said on June 2: "Since we started running trams between Picardy Place and Newhaven as part of testing and commissioning, this is the first incident of its kind. Hence, it has also occasionally happened on the current network and has been dealt with successfully by our Service Delivery team.

"Therefore, we are confident that incidents like this will not represent an issue in the future once we launch services to Newhaven."

Edinburgh Trams have been contacted for comment.
