Sickening George North injury puts Lions tour in doubt as agonising scream heard inside stadium

George North’s chances of touring South Africa with the British and Irish Lions this summer have been thrown into doubt after he sustained a knee injury on Saturday evening.

The 102-cap Wales star twisted awkwardly and went down holding his right leg in the second half of the Ospreys’ Rainbow Cup match against the Cardiff Blues

It was an innocuous incident that saw him stumble to the turf after play had been halted for a knock-on.

North’s painful cries were heard from the stands as he tentatively held his right knee before reluctantly letting the physios take over.

After receiving treatment for a few minutes, he was helped off the field by two medics, appearing to put very little weight on the injured limb.

North had enjoyed a resurgence in recent months, turning in a number of impressive performances during Wales’ recent Six Nations campaign at centre.

He looked likely to be named in Warren Gatland’s 36 man squad on May 6.

The Ospreys were winning the game 19-0 at the time.
