Sickening attack sees two dogs maul woman's much-loved cat to death

A woman has been left heartbroken after her beloved cat was ripped to pieces by two dogs off their lead.

Snowy the cat was out exploring in Nelson early on Sunday (June 25) morning when a dog chased after her. CCTV footage from a house directly next to where the attack happened shows the terrified cat taking shelter under a parked car but when a second dog appears she makes a desperate bid for freedom only to be grabbed by one of the dogs, LancsLive reports.

For almost a minute the two dogs fling the cat and tug at either end while Snowy wails and screams. A man can then be heard shouting "get off" before two women appear on the scene.

The video has been heavily edited by our sister site, LancsLive, so that the distressing scenes aren't shown. We have also turned off the sound so viewers aren't able to hear Snowy's screams.

As Snowy lays dead on the floor the two women walking the dogs come over and barely give her a second glance as they put the dogs on their leads. One of the women appears to be singing to herself as she leaves the scene while the other screams at the second dog and seems to kick it as she shouts: "Who the f*** do you think you are?"

A friend of the owner, Kat, said that Snowy was the woman's "life". The owner, in her 70s, said she had reported the incident to police.

Kat told LancsLive: "It's just absolutely sickening. I only watched it the one time; I can't bring myself to watch it again.

"Snowy was out on Sunday morning, at about 5.30am, and these two dogs off lead came running over and grabbed her. She tried to hide under the car but they got her.

"I couldn't believe how long it went on for before the dog walkers appeared. They didn't seem to care at all about the cat and the woman seems to be singing as she walks off.

"The owner is in bits. She's such a strong character and I've never seen her cry before. She's devastated as she'd had Snowy a long time.

"I can't believe how heartless these two people are. We've been given names and passed that on. Do they have no shame? It's like they couldn't care less about poor Snowy."

LancsLive has approached Lancashire Constabulary for a comment, however, guidance published by West Yorkshire Police states: "there have been decisions in the past by courts and authorities to suggest that it is the nature of a dog to kill and wound small animals.

"As such, unfortunately there is no certainty that the police could take action, in the event of your pet being killed or wounded by a dog. The police will however take action if the dog was dangerously out of control.

"A court can decide that a dog is dangerously out of control if either of the following apply -

  • If it attacks another person's animal, or
  • the owner of an animal thinks that they could be injured trying to stop your dog attacking their animal."
