Sickened community rallies to help replace disabled man's stolen wheelchair

A sickened community has launched a fundraising campaign to replace a disabled man's stolen wheelchair.

Daymien Sim, 23, of Stevenston, is relying on crutches after thieves swiped his expensive powered wheelchair from outside a friend's house earlier this week.

Now disgusted pals in his hometown are getting behind a crowd funding initiative to help Daymien, who has cerebral palsy, with the cost of buying a new one.

A Go Fund Me page, which can be found here , was set up yesterday by Donna Herring and £135 of a £1500 target had already been raised at the time of writing.

She said: "I’m very hopeful that we could all come together and raise enough money to get Daymien a new chair, I have been in contact with a family member and have been given the permission to set this up.

"Any donation made would be really appreciated."

Daymien's distinctive black wheelchair with long foot plates and a white golf ball gear stick for maneuvering was stolen from Hyslop Road on Monday, December 16 between 4pm and 6.15pm.

Police today confirmed inquiries are still continuing into the incident and Daymien is praying the culprits have a pang of conscience.

He said: "All I'm asking for is the wheelchair to be returned so that I can get my independence back.

"I'm having to use crutches just now and in this weather it can be really difficult to walk, particularly on wet surfaces. I'm having to be really careful and take it easy.

"I would ask whoever had done this to think what it would be like if they had disabled children and what the lasting effects would be on them."

Daymien is also urging drivers to check their dash cam footage in the hope of identifying the culprits.

He is also asking scrap metal yards to remain vigilant.

Anyone with information should contact Irvine Police Station through 101, quoting reference number 3049 of 16th December.
