Sick Norwegian Cruise Line passengers checked by paramedics in L.A.

LOS ANGELES _ Six people who had fallen ill aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship that was docked at the Port of Los Angeles on Sunday were evaluated by paramedics as they disembarked, authorities said.

Of the six people examined, four were sent to a hospital for further medical treatment, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

There were no details about the passengers' illness, but Humphrey said none of their symptoms were life-threatening.

The ship was identified as Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Joy, according to the Fire Department.

The cruise line later issued a statement about the incident, saying "the safety, security and well-being of our guests and crew is our number one priority. As such, we operate at the very highest public health standards.

"During Norwegian Joy's Panama Canal sailing, a few guests on-board experienced a stomach-related illness. To mitigate any impact of this rare occurrence, we implemented stringent sanitation procedures. As always, we will continue to monitor this situation."
