Siblings create song for parents who married after six weeks on 50th anniversary

Two siblings have created a special song to celebrate their parents who got married after six weeks and are now celebrating their 50th Wedding anniversary.

Former solider Jerry Fairfowl met the love of his life Terry, 50 years ago at a cross community dance in West Belfast and six weeks later they were married and heading off to start a life together in England.

Their children say that the couple are still as in love with each other now, as they were all those years ago when they first met.

As a way of marking their special milestone, their son Andrew Fairfowl wrote a song for them called 'Six Weeks' which details their journey together. His sister Kimberley provided backing vocals for the track.

Their English father had joined the army at a young age  where he became a PT instructor, while his "dancing queen" mum from the Grosvenor Road had been orphaned in her early teens after the sad passing of her parents.

Andrew said: "My dad came over to Belfast at the beginning of the troubles where he worked as a PT instructor. My mum, who grew up dancing, would put on dances in her community.

"They actually met at a cross community dance that they helped to organise. My dad asked her for a dance there and at first she said no, because she had just rejected someone else, but he persisted and six weeks later they were planning on getting married.

"This was because dad was going to be stationed elsewhere outside of Northern Ireland, and asked mum to marry him so she could go with him. Although he also said he would come back as soon as he could to see her if she didn't.

"She said yes and they were quickly heading off to England to start a life together."

Kimberley Fairfowl said that their parents have been an inspiration and throughout have remained as in love as the day they got married.

She said: "They are practically inseparable and always have been. They still sit cuddled up on the sofa together holding each others hands every night which is so lovely to see.

"To think that they got married after only knowing each other for six weeks and 50 years later still being madly in love is incredible."

Andrew said that a couple of days before their anniversary, the idea of writing a song for them came into his head after he found himself thinking about the short space of time in which they tied the knot.

Half an hour later he had the lyrics written and headed off to his music studio to produce it.

He then played the song for his parents on their anniversary, which brought his mum to tears.

Andrew said: "Once I started writing the song it flowed so quickly I was finished in about half an hour. Then I spent most of the next day getting it ready in my studio.

"When I played it for my parents on their anniversary it brought my mum to tears, and I was so pleased that they enjoyed it so much."

Andrew's song, 'Six Weeks' is available on Amazon, Itunes and Spotify.
