The Badminton Association of Thailand hopes the country's success at the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup will lead to a medal at this month's Asian Games in Indonesia.

At the Uber Cup in Bangkok in May, the Thai women's team recorded their best-ever result in the event by beating China in the semi-finals before losing to Japan in the final.

"We are determined to take home a medal after our failure four years ago," said BAT president Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul.

"We hope to win a medal in the women's team event."

The 18th Asian Games will be held from Aug 18-Sept 2 and the badminton tournament will take place at Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta from Aug 19-28.

There are seven gold medals on offer in the sport in the men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, men's and women's teams, and mixed doubles.

Patama first became involved in the Asian Games at the 2010 tournament in Guangzhou where she was the manager of the Thai team.

Patama got off to a good start as Thailand got a silver medal in the women's team contest and a bronze in the men's team event.

Four years later after Patama was elected as BAT president, Thailand failed to win a single medal at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon where China won four gold medals, Indonesia two and hosts South Korea one.

The BAT president admits that winning a medal at the 2018 Games is not easy as there are a lot of fine players in the continent. "Hosts Indonesia, China, Japan and South Korea are strong," she said.

"We hope we can get good results in the women's singles and doubles."

Led by Akane Yamaguchi and Nozomi Okuhara, Uber Cup champions Japan will be the women's team to beat in Indonesia.

China will be trying to bounce back in the women's team competition after suffering a shock loss to Thailand at the Uber Cup which led to the sacking of their coach Zhang Ning.

India cannot be underestimated as they have a strong women's team led by Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu.

Patama, 52, claimed that her players are in good physical condition after the world championships in Nanjing earlier this month.

However, while she admits that there will be a lot of work to do after Thais failed to reach the semi-finals at the Nanjing championships, she is confident that her players will get good results in Indonesia.

"I am confident that they will make us proud," said Patama.

Thailand will have 20 shuttlers at the quadrennial tournament.

The men's squad feature world No.20 Kantaphon Wangcharoen, No.23 Khosit Phetpradab, No.28 Suppanyu Avihingsanon, Pannawit Thongnuam, Tinn Siriyanet, Kittisak Namdash, Dechapol Puawaranukroh, Nipitphon Phuangphuapet, Kittinuphong Ketren and Ingkarat Aphisuk.

The women's team are led by world No.4 Ratchanok Intanon with her teammates being No.12 Nitchaon Jindapol, No.18 Pornpawee Chochuwong, No.23 Busanan Ongbamrungphan, Jongkolphan Kititharakul, Rawinda Prajongjai, Sapsiree Taerattanachai, Puttita Supajirakul, Chayanit Chaladchalam and Phataimas Muenwong.

Busanan, who played a key role for Thailand at the Uber Cup, is confident that the women's team are capable of winning a medal.

"Which medal we are going to win depends on the draw," she said.

Nitchaon said she is raring to go and will do her best in the team and individual events.

Jongkolphan and Rawinda could be medal contenders in the women's doubles after being the best Thai performers at the world championships with a quarter-final berth.

The last time Thailand claimed any badminton medals at the Asian Games was in Guangzhou in 2010, when they took home the women's team silver and men's team bronze medals.

Thailand have won only one Asian Games gold medal thanks to the success of their men's team in 1966.

China have been the dominant force, winning 40 gold medals ahead of Indonesia's 26.

Badminton is one of the most popular sports in Indonesia and the hosts aim to win four golds. At the Incheon Games, Indonesia took home two gold, one silver and one bronze medals.
